SSI Scuba Certification Path

When it comes to diving in open water, many dive outfitters require each individual hold some sort of scuba certification in order to qualify for the trip. This certification ensures the outfitter that each person diving is knowledgeable and experienced. Although there are a number of licenses for underwater trips, the SSI certification is one of the most conclusive diving educations available to people of all ages.

What’s SSI

SSI stands for Scuba Schools International, an open water diving school that offers personalized training to help each of their students become more comfortable diving in open water. SSI has diving schools across the globe, including the US, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and more! Their open water diving certification is broken up into three parts, the academics, pool diving, and open water diving, to make sure each diver has a full understanding of the diving process, and can complete all the physical challenges of the activity with ease.

SSI Diving Courses

SSI offers a range of informational classes designed to better inform and train their students. Thankfully, Scuba Schools International has everything from beginner to advanced classes, all of which are guided.
A previous step from the SSI scuba certification system is the Scuba Rangers program. It is a diving course for kids, this program is taught by specially trained scuba instructors and conducted in a pool with maximum depths of 12 feet. To promote safety and ensure each child is getting the most out of their diving experience, there is a 1 to 2 instructor to student ratio for each class.

The real starting level is the Open Water Diver course. The SSI open water diver course is the best way for adolescents and adults to sharpen their diving knowledge and gain confidence in the water. This course offers three main focuses: academics, pool training, and open water sessions. The academics portion of the course is located online, allowing each person to learn at their own pace. The pool training comes after the academic studies, and allows each individual to get accustomed to their breathing gear and wetsuits. After the pool training, each student must finish at least 4 open water dives. This allows everyone to practice all of their diving techniques in a true open water setting.
